Baščaršija Sarajevo - the historical core and the most famous attraction of the city

Baščaršija is an old Sarajevo bazaar and the most famous tourist attraction in Sarajevo. Located in the municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, on the banks of the river Miljacka, Baščaršija represents the historical, cultural and social center of the city.

It was built in the 15th century, during the Ottoman rule, when Isa-beg Ishaković founded Sarajevo. The name Baščaršija comes from the Turkish word "baş" (main), which in translation means the main bazaar, and it has retained its role as the main city center to this day.

Baščaršija throughout history was organized by trades, which can still be seen today in street names such as Kazandžiluk, Sarač, Kovač and Čurčiluk. For centuries, coppersmiths, carpenters, blacksmiths and other craftsmen worked here, making Baščaršija one of the most important commercial centers in the Balkans.

Among the most important sights of Baščaršija are:

  • Gazi Husrev Bey Mosque
  • Sebilj
  • Gazi Husrev-bey's bezistan
  • Brusa bezistan
  • Morića han
  • Clock tower

In the 16th century, Baščaršija experienced its greatest boom, with more than 12,000 craft and trade shops, and developed trade with Dubrovnik, Venice and the rest of Europe.

Although it has suffered fires, destruction and demolition attempts throughout its history, Baščaršija has preserved its authentic appearance and spirit. Today, it is a place where oriental architecture, traditional Bosnian cuisine, souvenirs and everyday city life meet.

A visit to Baščaršija offers a unique experience of Sarajevo - a walk through history, culture and tradition, which makes it an unmissable destination for local and foreign guests.
