Franciscan Museum of Gorica

Franciscan Museum of Gorica

The permanent display of the archaeological collection is housed in the new building of the museum complex, across roughly 350 m² of exhibition space. Through a large number of artefacts, it traces the cultural and historical continuity of the Livno area and the neighbouring plains, from prehistoric times to the 16th century, with careful attention to its scholarly, educational and visual qualities and to a logical flow for visitors moving through the exhibits.

Alongside the chronological sequence, the layout is organised into themes within each period: everyday life, art, religion and writing. Each historical period has its own colour: prehistory – earthy red, Rome – red, early Christianity – yellow-orange, the Middle Ages – purple. The archaeological exhibits are accompanied by illustrations and atmospheric reconstructions within the space.

  • Part of the illustrative material has been turned into video projections, shown with a musical backdrop as part of the permanent display. Visitors can also play a Roman board game with counters and try their hand at weaving on a reconstructed prehistoric wooden loom.

The oldest exhibits date from the Late Eneolithic. The Early Bronze Age is represented by ceramic finds from hillforts. A special display is devoted to finds from a prehistoric grave beneath Tumulus No. 16 on the Kupres Plain. The Delmatae are presented through finds from hillforts, graves and a warrior's hoard. After the arrival of the Romans, the Delmatae adopted elements of Roman civilisation; this part of the exhibition is divided into several themes: the Roman army, Romanisation, roads, architecture, dress, tools and crafts, stonemasons' workshops, epigraphy, games, cults and funerary customs. Early Christianity is documented by fragments of church architecture and furnishings. Finds relating to the baptismal font and early Christian liturgy, everyday life and Late Antique necropolises are displayed as separate sections. Avar arrowheads mark the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, which began with the arrival of the Croats. Church architecture, with displayed fragments of church furnishings, forms a thematic section of its own. The display cases hold finds of jewellery, ceramic vessels, tools and weapons from graves. For the Late Middle Ages, alongside the jewellery and items of dress on show, the most important section consists of finds from the Franciscan Monastery of St. Ivo in Livno, dating from the early 14th century. Writing forms a separate section of this period. A place of honour goes to the inscribed slab of the priest Tjehodrag of Lištani, written in Croatian Cyrillic in the mid-12th century. With the arrival of the Turks, which opened a new era, the archaeological exhibition comes to an end as a historical and cultural whole.
